As I researched my story for the National Catholic Register on the appointment of Archbishop Jose Gomez to the Los Angeles Archdiocese, I was struck by his deep faith, energy for vocations and evangelization, and his strong leadership, which has long been felt in the Catholic Hispanic community, but will increasingly shape the direction of the church and the culture in this country. Many U.S. dioceses are playing catch up, in their efforts to fully integrate Hispanics as full participants in the church. Archbishop Gomez will show how the Catholic Church can decisively shape the future of Hispanic Americans, as it once did for past generations of immigrants.
