The Providence Journal reports today that Bishop Tobin of Providence, RI has moved to deny Rep. Patrick Kennedy Communion. Diocesan priests have been told to enforce the directive, but it remains to be seen how ordinaries in Massachusetts or Washington, D.C. will respond to Bishop Tobin's decision.
This fall has seen an escalation of concern within the Church regarding threats posed to traditional Catholic teaching on abortion, marriage and religious freedom. Earlier this week, a number of Catholic, Orthodox and Evangelical leaders issued a statement, The Manhattan Declaration, affirming their principled and practical opposition to threats posed to the sanctity of human life, traditional marriage and religious freedom.
