In my previous post, I wrote about how Pope Benedict's decision to lift the excommunication of the four schismatic bishops underscores his desire to fulfill his responsibility as pope. He believes the Petrine office is a source of Christian unity in truth, particularly in changing circumstances. Now, in the National Catholic Register, David Mills argues in "The Protestant Meltdown," that the conflicts besieging many Christian denominations, particularly the Episcopalian Church, highlight the value of papal authority, and thus the special appeal of Catholicism.
